How to Avoid Online Shopping Mistakes

Posted on 28 October 2008

In the past few years, online shopping has become very popular. Whether you are buying a book at Amazon.com or sending flowers to your mom, it is very easy to click, shop and order. However, there are several common mistakes that new online shoppers make.

Mistake 1: Not comparison shopping

It’s very easy to sit down at your computer and log into your favorite web site. For example, if you want to buy a book from Amazon.com, have you ever considered checking Barnes & Noble.com, http://www.barnesandnoble.com/? They offer very similar books, at competitive prices. Plus, a recent check of the site revealed free shipping on orders of $25+

Also compare prices with these sites:

Bizrate.com
MySimon.com

Mistake 2: Not checking web sites for promo codes

Regularly, web sites offer promotion codes for free shipping, $ off your order or % off your order. Where to find these codes and other special deals and sales? Here are a few sites:

Savingsmania.com
Amazing-bargains.com
Currentcodes.com
Mfet.net

Also, be sure to sign up for your favorite web sites newsletters for more specials and promotion codes.

Mistake 3: Giving Your Credit Card Information to Anyone

Never give out your credit card information to just anyone. If you find a great deal, but the site is not well known, give the company a call or check the Better Business Bureau, before entering your credit card information.

Mistake 4: Paying for shipping when you don’t have to

As previously mentioned, many web sites offer free shipping with minimum orders. If your order is just under the minimum, consider adding small items. For example, at Amazon.com, you can add a pack of Dove soap or a book, to reach the minimum.

Mistake 5: Not checking to see if a local store is cheaper

While online shopping is convenient and fast, you may pay more than if you bought the item at a local store. You can check Saleshound.com for sales prices of local stores.
