Great post. I have lived all over - Asia, Africa, Europe and traveled to more countries than some people believe (75+ at last count). When I was leaving the Marine Corps I showed my passports to the new Marines and one actually told me that I was a liar, and no one could have been to that many places.

Each trip involved at least one souvenir and you are spot on with the comment to pack it and not mail it. I have occasionally had things in my pockets bringing them home.

I am one of those that did not pay in cash, and the problem was that someone used my credit card number to make a big purchase. I was in the Dominican Republic and bought whatever and a week later someone used my number to buy film from a company in Florida and shipped it to the DR. Since my credit was good, the order for $20,000 was approved and sent. The delivery address was on a road where there were houses under construction, so the film was delivered. Fortunately my bank was insured and some insurance company covered the loss.

Also, people have to be careful of exchange rates. A lot of time the rate will change in a store if you are paying cash. Everything to make a buck!
