Dress for Success: The Interview

Posted on 19 October 2008

A bathing suit, jean shorts or a Halloween costume are a few items of clothing that people know not to wear to an interview. What is appropriate business attire? For those who are just entering the job market, it can be confusing to know what is acceptable dress for interviews.

Here are a few dress for success tips:

Tip 1: Invest in a couple well-made dark suits

Dark suits in colors like navy, gray or black will make the right impression. Also, men should stick with subtle printed ties. Cartoon-inspired or bold ties may make the wrong impression.

It’s important to have at least two suits as well. If you are called back for a second interview, you can’t wear the same outfit twice!

Tip 2: Well-made shoes, handbags and accessories make a statement

After you have your suits, invest in well-made accessories. For example, women will want to buy gold or silver jewelry, well made scarves and handbag. Men should have a nice watch and briefcase. These small details really make a difference!

Tip 3: Purchase a nice coat

While you may think a coat won’t be noticed, it will. As soon as you walk through the front door, you make an impression. A ski jacket or other type of casual outerwear won’t look right with a nice suit. A business style coat is necessary to complement your business attire.

Tip 4: Remember these don’ts!

Don’t wear or bring the following to your interview:

  • Sneakers
  • See through tops
  • Backpack
  • T-shirts
  • Baggy pants
  • Jeans
  • Shorts
  • Open toe shoes
  • Sleeveless tops
It’s important to use your best judgement when it comes to choosing what to wear to an interview. The right mix of business attire and accessories can truly help your confidence to soar!
